Couldn't agree more. This argument of possibility vs probability is one I have every day with engineers and even some managers who really should know better.
I am responsible for the security of some 4000+ high end linux/unix systems including SOx material systems and we do not (my hands are tied) differentiate between a spare desktop with no local storage and a SOx server conducting more than 50Mil Euros/day. The result is a poorly focused solution that annoys the business and offers poor security where we really need it.
It should be said there is little to no appetitie for proper risk mgt in my organisation.....
